Malahayati University; Religious & Humanist

MALAHAYATI University is an institution of higher education in Indonesia which is not only developing knowledge from various disciplines, the students will also be equipped with discipline, ethics, and religion.

In addition, the values of humanist are instilled through fostering the orphans that are included in the statutes of the university. A concern for the orphans, for example a rector must foster 12 orphans, 10 for vice-chancellor, 8 for deans, 6 for heads of departments, 4 for professors, 2 for employees and 1 child for the students.

Located on Pramuka Street No. 27, Bandar Lampung, University Malahayati occupies 84 acres of land. Many facilities are available here. Besides the complete educational facilities, it’s also equipped with dormitory, sports facilities such as golf, badminton, futsal, swimming pool, and also equipped with a culinary.

There is even a hospital facility which is located a few meters to the left of the campus gates, named Bintang Amin Hospital. In order to get better health care, its management is currently working with Pertamina Hospital in Jakarta, thus its name is Pertamina Bintang Amin Hospital.

He is Dr (HC) H. Rusli Bintang who initiated the private university in the eastern of Sumatra. An Acehnese entrepreneur who is well-known is known as a father of orphans took the name of a heroine from Aceh, Admiral Malahayati for the name of the university.

Rusli’s intention was manifested through the Foundation of Technology Transfer (ALTEK) Bandar Lampung which was established on August 27th 1993. Since then, Rusli chose to concentrate on developing Malahayati University in Lampung. He is already experienced in establishing a university, he had built Abulyatama University in Banda Aceh.

In Bandar Lampung, first Rusli rented a four-door shop (shophouse) with three floors on Kartini Street, Bandar Lampung, to make students study at his college. There were four faculties at that time, medicine, economics, engineering, and Academy of Nursing. This happened in 1994.

Rusli did not want his students squeezed in that shophouse. So he devoted all his efforts to build an ideal campus. For example, Rusli diligently visited various well-known campuses in Indonesia and even abroad. From there, he studied and applied them to Malahayati University. Of course he did not forget the cultural richness in Indonesia, so he combined the science and developments but still in the local wisdom.

Two years later, in 1996, Malahayati University relocated to Pramuka Street No. 27, Bandar Lampung. This location was a jungle before. A quiet place at the edge of the city, so often occurs crime which is often called as ‘begal’ in Lampung.

The presence of the University Malahayati has changed many things. Besides being a crowded place, the economic community around it began to grows. And the most important thing is the incidence of crime disappears.

Developments in the complex of the campus continues to grow. In 2002, Malahayati University School of Public Health officially was established. Three years later Bachelor of Nursing Program was opened. Then in 2006 Midwifery Diploma Program DIII and DIV were opened. Then in 2009, the Faculty of Public Health opened the Post Graduate Program for Master of Health.

Now, Rusli doesn’t really like to talk on what he had done. He prefers that everyone can come and see for themselves into the campus located in 84 acres of land, so they can know clearly and detail what the students can do in the campus of Malahayati University.

The campus can easily be reached from outside Bandar Lampung, from Raden Inten Airport, and the Bakauheni port as the connection to Java.

The uniqueness of the library is also caused by the visit of many tourists.
